| 2010 Topps National Chicle Baseball has created quite a bit of buzz, even before it's 4/29/10 release date. Before diving into the set, let's take a look at some of the reaction to the Chicle set before it even hit hobby and retail stores. Chris Harris over at the StaleGum.com Blog said the set had "fail" written all over it, in a post published January 8, 2010. Chris was particulary concerned about the design of three cards. |

The Babe Ruth/Chipper Jones Card: The initial preview in early January, 2010 of the Topps Chicle set was a little vague. Beckett got a hold of some card pictures, and didn't give a whole lot of detail. It's no wonder card bloggers were up in arms by the 'Ruth/Chipper card. DayF over at the CardboardJunkie Blog even gave some visual clarity to the situation: ![]() |

Before all hell broke loose, blogger JayBee Anama wrote a story about the reasoning behind the design of the Ruth card. The example above of Babe Ruth in an Atlanta Braves uniform is one of 25 cards within the subset called "Retired Stars Revisited." The concept utilizes 25 retired stars in the MODERN DAY JERSEYS of a team they played for. To wit, the Babe ended his career with the Braves...the Boston Braves. So, we see him here, looking his "Chipper" best, in the Atlanta Braves outfit. Read Full Article Topps got 12 of the top sports artists to design the 330 Card Base Set. Artists include: Monty Sheldon, Jeff Zachowski, Dave Hobrecht, Paul Lempa, Brian Kong, Chris Felix, Don Higgins, Mike Kupka, Brett Farr, Jason Davies, Chris Henderson and Ken Branch. One of the artists, Dave Hobrecht, even sent a written reply to DayF at Cardboard Junkie to explain the design of certain cards in the Chicle set. One thing I love about art is that there are styles for everyone. Even though you ripped the Chipper Ruth...somewhere out there will be a guy that digs it. I just hope that guys like you...guys that other people look to for opinions and info will give it a fair chance.
With those details in hand, it helped to explain the other two cards that were also creating a buzz. |

Ichiro Seattle Pilots: JayBee Anama over at his bdj610's Topps Baseball Card Blog once again provides the clarity for the Ichiro and the Thomas/Flowers Card. Ichiro here is one of ten players included in the Vintage Veterans subset. This puts ten modern day heroes in the jerseys of teams from a bygone era. |

Frank Thomas/Tyler Flowers No-Name-in-Front (NNOF) Card: Now comes the final subset. Twenty MLB Rookie Card Logo players (most who already are in the base set) will be featured in this subset called Rookie Renditions. The concept, take these twenty green athletes, and drop them into noteworthy cards in Topps' sixty year history. The above card is of the infamous 1990 Topps Frank Thomas No-Name-in-Front (NNOF) Be sure to check out JayBee Anama's Topps Blog. |
