1954 Topps Baseball
Complete Set: 250 Cards
1954 saw Topps up the stakes in the baseball card war with Bowman. Topps signed Ted Williams to an exclusive 5 year contract to appear on trading cards for $400 a year. According to Topps executive Sy Berger, prior to 1954, the company had never paid more then $125 for an exclusive player contract.
Things to note: Their is no top border on the 1954 Topps Baseball cards. The color bleeds through the top, but the sides and bottom do have a white border. These cards are the same size as the 1952 & 1953 Topps baseball sets. Sports Illustrated magazine printed some 1954 Topps cards in their magazine as an uncut sheet and it should be noted that at times people try and pass these off as real 1954 Topps baseball cards.

When you pay a guy $400 a year, he is going to be the face of the set. Mickey Mantle was still just a young prospect for the NY Yankees, making Ted Williams the biggest star in the game.

In the early days of Topps, it was rare that a player was featured on more then one card. The more popular 1954 Ted Williams is card #1, but I kind of like the looks of the yellow background on card number #250
