1984/95 Star Basketball remains to this day one of the most interesting Basketball sets of all-time. The big names and limited release had collectors chasing down these cards years after it's release. The Star Company released it's products by the "team set" instead of the traditional packs and boxes that Topps and Fleer were using for Football and Baseball products in the mid 1980's. Star was an innovative trading card company in that they produced insert and special sets long before they became popular in the mid 1990's. The biggest draw for collectors in the 84/85 Star Basketball Set were the rookie cards, or the term that has become popular with Star products, the XRC. It stands for "Extended Rookie Card". In those days, Star was the only game in town when it came to Basketball cards. The market was so small, that it's widely believed only 3,000 - 6,000 sets per team were produced in 84/85. In 1982 Topps ended it's almost 25 year run of producing basketball cards. Fleer didn't step back into the NBA market until the 1986/87 season. It allowed The Star Company an opportunity to have a three year run as the kings of the NBA trading card world. They distributed the 1984/85 Star Basketball cards through a small network of dealers and released the set in three series from January 1985 - May 1985. Original price back then was $2.50 - $5.00 per team poly bag. Star did not obtain a license for the 1986/87 season and promptly went out of NBA trading card business. Star was a small company, and therefore the cards they produced were not the highest of quality. Many of the Michael Jordan XRC cards are plagued by centering issues. The colored borders also pose a problem for chipping and fraying. When these cards became popular in the early to mid 1990's, counterfeiters took advantage and could reproduce these cards to scam collectors. If you are looking to buy or sell any 1984/85 Star Basketball cards then I would go with the graded route. Buy or send in your cards to popular grading services PSA or BGS. |
