Please Note:
- Prices are from 2014. Will update when next Bowman set releases. Or just look them up on eBay.
- Card prices are for ungraded base autographs.
- Many Bowman cards end up graded. High grades sell for more. No kidding.
- Parallel autographs are worth more. Duh.
- 99% of Bowman Autographs made over the years are essentially worthless.
- Some players sign upwards of 10,000 autographs for one Bowman set.
- Bowman Busts = a player who was worth good money and then price tanked.
It seems clear that the allure of the unknown aides the prices of prospect baseball cards. Even as players go onto have success (and actually reach the big leagues) their cards can actually go down in value. Most people, even Bowman collectors, don’t go to minor league games. Fans typically read about prospects through media sources and look at stats.
I asked a New York Mets scout at the 2013 Arizona Fall League what are some of the things I should look for when watching young players. His first comment was “Don’t believe everything you read in Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook.”
The first time I saw Byron Buxton play he struck out four times. That’s actually hard to do.
Brandon Wood hit 14 HR’s in 29 games at the Arizona Fall League in 2005. That’s hard to do.
Wood has a .186 career batting average in 700 MLB at bats. 18 total HR’s.
The first time I saw Mark Appel pitch he walked 4 in 2 Innings on July 25, 2013.
The first time I saw Carlos Correa it seemed like he could be over matched by hard throwers.
The first time I saw Kris Bryant play he hit a HR.
Bryant will need to hit a ton of HR’s to justify card prices. He strikes out a lot because he is tall.
Billy Hamilton is as fast as everyone says he is.
Trevor Bauer’s pre-game long toss is the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen on a baseball diamond.
Quick bats/wrists = Addison Russell & Javier Baez.
Tanner Peters pitched the best minor league game I’ve ever seen. 2 outs from a perfect game.
Peters will probably never play in the major leagues.
I’ve been to many minor league games where I didn’t see a pitch reach 90 MPH.
At least 50% of the HR’s I’ve seen hit at Banner Island Ballpark would be outs in Major League stadiums.
Very, very few players turn into Albert Pujols, Mike Trout and Derek Jeter.
The best player I’ve ever seen, Barry Bonds, is generally shunned by collectors & the baseball community.
I’m fully aware Bonds used steroids for part of his career.
