Top 10 Hottest Cards
-Baseball Cards on eBay –
July 2010

1 – 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Red Autograph 1/1 ~ Last Month (5)

The 2010 Bowman Red Refractor debuted on eBay in the month of June, and the bidding approached $1 million. The seller of the card got concerned about the authenticity of the bids and decided to sell the card with Huggins and Scott Auctions in July.  The final price ended at $17,000.00.  While the $17K is far from $1 million, it’s still a staggering sum for a modern day baseball card.

It also raises the question if selling the card with Huggins & Scott was a good move. Perhaps getting pre-approved bidders from eBay may have brought in more buyers.

Lot Number: 1A
Starting Bid: $9,000.00
Final Price: $17,000.00
Auction Ended: July 28, 2010

2 – 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter Beethoven 1/1 DNA Relic Hair ~ Last Month (NR)

This was the most watched card on eBay during the month of July. While it’s not a “baseball player” card, it still drew significant attention from both collectors and historians alike. The final auction ended with over 700 watchers which is a huge number even for eBay’s most popular baseball card auctions.

The seller of the card, billys_sport_treasures, owns a hobby shop in Minnesota also aptly called Billy’s Sports Treasures. The shop owner said he pulled the card while opening a promotional pack for his customers.

Watchers: 728
Final Price: $4,050.02
Auction Ended: July 18

3 – 2010 Allen & Ginter Chipper Jones Cabinet Name Plate 1/1 ~ Last Month (NR)

The Beethoven card was the most watched trading card, then I guess, technically, this Chipper Jones Cabinet Name Plate card was the most watched “baseball” card. This stunning over sized card features almost the entire name plate of J-O-N-E-S on the front.

My guess is that a big time Chipper Jones or Atlanta Braves fan picked this card up and will keep it in a personal collection for many years to come.

Watchers: 447
Final Price: $702.00
Auction Ended: July 6

4 – Stephen Strasburg Rookie Cards ~ Last Month (2)

At the end of July, Stephen Strasburg was placed on the D.L. with arm trouble and some of the luster and hype went out the window. Prices for his 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter SP Mini and his 2010 Topps Tribute Autograph/Relic Redemption have still been high even after the injury.

We’ll see how much the Nationals push Strasburg after he comes off the disabled list. It might be a good idea for them to sit him down early instead of risking further injury. Strasburg is a huge draw at the gate for the struggling Nationals so perhaps the ownership tries to squeeze as much as they can out of him in 2010.

5 – 2010 Bowman Chrome Bryce Harper USA Superfractor 1/1 ~ Last Month (3)

The seller of this card just can’t decide how to sell this card. It has been on and off eBay, by my count, 4 different times. 2 times with a reserve auction that ended both times with the reserve price not being met. The other two times were fixed priced auctions. Once for $25,000.00 or best offer, and the present fixed price auction of $15,500..00 o.b.o.

Be sure to check out the detailed write up about this card here.

6 – 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball ~ Last Month (NR)

Since it’s debut in 2006, Topps Allen & Ginter has been one of the most anticipated sets of the year. The 2010 version did create some controversy because the Strasburg mini cards were very short printed. Some collectors were upset because Topps did not make that announcement until after the set came out. Overall, it’s a fun box to open, and this month the two most watched cards on eBay were from ’10 Allen & Ginter.

7 – Buster Posey Rookie Cards ~ Last Month (NR)

The SF Giants top prospect took over when Bengie Molina was traded to the Rangers, and the former #5 overall pick has delivered the goods. He has shown his variety of tools and should be a mainstay in the Giants lineup for many years to come.

Collectors have started to get in on the Posey bandwagon and prices for his rookie cards have shot up in value during the month of July.

8 – 2010 Bowman Baseball ~ Last Month (4)

This set is still on fire. You can still sell retail boxes on eBay for more than what you can buy them for at Walmart and Target. Even though a large amount of the big Strasburg pulls have already been scooped, collectors are still paying a premium for this product. With 2010 Bowman Chrome on the horizon, be sure to get your boxes or cases early!

9 – Michael Stanton Rookie Cards ~ Last Month (NR)

Stanton fell off the hot list last month but made his debut in May. His play so far has been okay, but it’s clear the tools and talent are there.  This kid has an opportunity to be a super star, and prices for his early rookie cards are still somewhat affordable. When he catches his stride he might be an NL MVP candidate in a few short years.

10 – 2010 Topps Tribute Baseball~ Last Month (NR)

I am not a big fan of this product, but it’s been somewhat hot during the first two weeks of it’s release. The boxes I’ve seen opened on YouTube were mostly duds and not worth the $300.00 +++ price tag. Be very careful when buying this product. Don’t expect to see it back on the August edition of the hot list either.
