The NBA is back December 25, 2011
Basketball fans rejoiced around the world in late November when the lockout between the leagues owners and players finally was resolved in late hour negotiations. The exciting 2010-11 NBA Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat seems like a distant memory and overall, the lockout greatly impacted the sales of basketball trading cards. The exclusive maker of NBA licensed cards, Panini America, halted operations of all b-ball cards during the standoff – whereas normally several sets would have already hit the market by December 1st. Cards that exploded in value last year – like Blake Griffin Rookie cards and rare Dirk Nowitzki cards – have softened in price considerably and it will remain to be seen if there is any hangover from the shortened 11-12 season with card collectors.
Leading up to the start of the new basketball season, members of the Sports Card Radio Fan Forum were given an opportunity to select the card they thought would go up in value the most this season. There were no restrictions and they were free to choose any current or former player in the league. But they had to be specific on which card they thought would rise in value and give insight into why they thought this year was the year to cash in. StealSecond took cues from Show #86 where Colin talked about how the value of Shaquille O’Neal cards still have room to go up. Shaq will be on TV a lot this year and perhaps old Laker fans who still carry a grudge will soften their stance when the Big Diesel gets his jersey retired soon.

Jordan Crawford made waves during the off-season when he said something to the effect “I don’t like to talk about it, but I think I can be better then MICHAEL Jordan.” Crawford does not lack confidence and can score the rock at will. He is a favorite of Sports Card Show host Colin. Expect Crawford’s card prices to rise if he gets off to a hot start.

Despite being drafted during the 2009 NBA Draft, this will be the very first season Rubio plays in the big boy league. Some experts question his size and overall ability, but some see a flashy point guard who could bring some heat to the frozen winter in Minnesota.

One of the most athletic young players in the league, Demar is looking to assert himself this year as a stud. He had a fantastic season in 10-11 when he averaged 17.2 points per game. It’s shocking this autograph can be found on eBay for less then $5 delivered. Wow.

After firmly establishing himself as one of the NBA’s best players, Rose will look to build on the 10-11 season by getting the Bulls deeper in the playoffs. Look for him to light up the Lakers (Derek Fisher) on Christmas Day which could send a jolt to his card prices early on.

There is rampant speculation that Howard may get traded from Orlando to a destination like New York or L.A. Getting traded to the Lakers should easily push these cards to over $100 and possibly much higher.

There is a chance the Knicks may add another player like Chris Paul to the duo of Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. They will have to compete for many years with the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference and need to add a key piece to unlock the value of Anthony cards.

It could be full fledged ‘Jimmer Time’ in Sacramento this season. He can shoot and has more game then you think. Will he get bullied by bigger players? Maybe. The excuse he doesn’t play defense is a poor one – there are only a handful of guys in the league who actually do D-UP game in and game out.

Hedo has a lot of talent but has bounced around teams the last few years. $6.99 for his SPx rookie autograph card is pretty cheap. Back in Orlando this year perhaps that will help the value of his trading cards.

Teague has gotten limited playing time during his first two years in the NBA – but in the 2011-12 Playoffs, he averaged 11.8 points per game and shot 51% from the field. He is athletic and has the ability to score. It sometimes takes young players a few years to find their comfort zone in the league and if Teague has been working hard on his game over the summer he could be a sleeper candidate to have his cards break out.

Randolph is an interesting player who has gobs of talent. Will he ever put it all together and become a star? Much like Teague – it takes guys awhile to figure things out. Randolph could be a Lamar Odom type of player with potentially more upside.
